ASPE Member, Dr. James Carlson, appointed as Dean of the College of Health Professions (CHP) at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science

I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. James Carlson as Dean of the College of Health Professions (CHP). Dr. Carlson has served the University for 13 years in various roles. He is currently the Vice Dean for CHP, providing leadership and support for the college’s programs, students, faculty and staff. He also leads the Department of Healthcare Simulation where he has worked to develop and integrate state-of-the-art simulation based training into the clinical programs at the University. Dr. Carlson will continue to provide leadership and oversight of this department as the Associate Vice President for Clinical Simulation.
Dr. Carlson has also served the University through his involvement in a number of other University programs. He continues to provide teaching for the Chicago Medical School and held the role of Assistant Dean for Evaluation and Assessment in CMS. More recently, he has worked to ensure that the DePaul MENP program has had a smooth transition to the RFUMS campus and actively participates in the DePaul Pathways program. Dr. Carlson participated in the design and implementation of several recent initiatives including the Morningstar Interprofessional Education Center (IPEC) and the Rothstein-Warden Centennial Learning Center. He is also a member of the Master Teacher Guild and is well respected for mentoring faculty in the use of innovative educational approaches.
Dr. Carlson is a 2001 graduate of the RFUMS Physician Assistant Program and was the first graduate from the RFUMS PhD program in Interprofessional Healthcare Studies. He has developed research expertise in simulation-based training, patient safety, and clinical reasoning. Dr. Carlson has given many invited lectures and national presentations in these topic areas and has published his work in peer-reviewed journals. Additionally, he has received several research grants to study the use of simulation-based training in Physician Assistant Education and was awarded the Physician Assistant Foundation’s Breitman-Dorn Fellowship to support his research on interprofessional teams.
Dr. Carlson is looking forward to his new role as Dean of the College of Health Professions and is committed to continuing the College’s long tradition of excellence. Please join me in congratulating Jim!
